Our goal today is to finish the play. We will begin class by working on vocabulary and then read Act V and discuss. If time, we will begin watching the film.
Whew!! After a long break, we have A LOT of work to get done in this short week.
Today we will do our best to get through act II scene iv and all of Act IV. We need to continue to fill out the two charts that you have in your notes already. One is looking at the characters' passions and the other is keeping track of the mounting circumstantial evidence against Desdemona. Today we will also examine the impact of jealousy as a ruling passion in the play. Are there other ruling passions at work as well? We will look at what jealousy is and where it comes from. This spawns from a conversation with Emilia where she states: "But jealous souls will not be answer'd so; they are not ever jealous for the cause, but jealous for they are jealous. 'Tis a monster Begot upon itself, born on itself" Act III scene iv lines 155-157). We will begin a creative response where we explore the idea of passion using any of the visual or written texts. This builds on the writing we did right at the beginning of this unit. If time we will continue to work on our vocabulary for Act IV. Today we will be on the computers working on vocabulary for Act III. Anyone who didn't hand in Act II questions yesterday, needs to hand them in today. We will then watch Act III on the film. While we do this we will be filling out the chart on the reasons that Iago gives Othello that Desdemona is having an affair. This chart is due on Wednesday.
In the first period today, we will be practicing and getting ready to present our scenes. In the second class today, we will present our scenes and mark them.
There is a sub in class for these days as I am away with SPEAK students in Calgary. You will watch ACT II on Monday and then complete the questions that were given out on Friday.
On Tuesday you will start Act III and you are required to do an acting assignment (FUN!!). This will require you to engage with the text and ask questions about what is happening in your scene and why. Unfortunately, we have A LOT of work to do today. I would LOVE if we could read most of Act II today. We will then fill out our charts...these need to be completed up to act II for homework. Next week, we will check in to see how our reading comprehension is going with Shakespeare!
Today we will catch up on what was missed yesterday (sorry!) and then look at Kahil Gibran's "Reason and Passion IX" and discuss how it relates to the brainstorming chart that you worked on yesterday...then we will have to get to work on our door!!
I'm so sorry but I'm away again today. You will begin class by taking a simple 10 question quiz on Act I. This is just a comprehension check to make sure that you are understanding what's happening in the play so far. After you will have 20 minutes or so to work on the new vocabulary list at www.bigiq.com...Othello Act II list. We will then watch Act I of the film to really solidify our knowledge of what's happening. Finally, you will work on a graphic organizer looking at Passions in the play. ![]()
Today we will finish Act I and then take a quiz on Socrative.com. This is just a test to ensure that you are understanding what we are reading as we progress. After we will do an agree/disagree/neutral activity to address the following questions:
1. Brabantio's outrage at Desdemona's secret wedding is justified. 2. The Duke dealt with the situation between Brabantio and Othello fairly. 3. Iago is really wise and intelligent. 4. Roderigo is a character deserving of sympathy. 5. You would like to have Othello as a friend. |
