We will start class today by finishing chapter 14.  We will discuss Dill's choice to come to Maycomb and relate this to our writing on how it feels to be cared for but not needed.  We will read chapter 15 and then complete the following writing assignment...

Explain this statement using thoughts from your life...

"A mob's always made up of people no matter what...a gang of wild animals can be stopped simply because they're still human" pg 210.

We will finish by watching a few scenes from "A Time to Kill" that relate to the pressures put on the family of those who have the courage to stand up for what they believe is write regardless of what the rest of society believes.

Today we will work on our vocabulary.  We will watch a short clip from the film "A Time to Kill".  Although this film takes place 30 years after the events in the novel, a lot of the issues present in part II of the text are present in this film.  We will take out the sentences we created yesterday and get rid of the "you" in them to make them more formal.  We will look at the "why" question.  Why shouldn't we judge a book by it's cover?  The answer to the "why" question is what will make what we have to say more thoughtful and insightful.  We will finish reading chapter 12.  For homework you will need to read chapter 13.  We will have a quick quiz tomorrow.

Homonyms and vocabulary work.  Finish reading chapter 9 pages 99-117.  Start collecting examples for an essay on judging others based on how things appear to be.  To use an old cliche "don't judge a book by it's cover".  Character review - each group to make a matching chart on each of the characters we've met so far in the text.  Read chap

Wow, 10 days off and how do we get started warming our brains up again...well, how about a little spelling and vocabulary.  We have 10 new words added to our vocabulary list and we will review our spelling words.

To remember our novel we will review chapters 1-9.  This is the first part of the text dealing with exposition of Maycomb life, the story of Boo Radley and lessons from Atticus and Miss Maudie. I have sent 5 questions to one person from each group.  You need to answer these as a group just to come back up to speed about what is happening in the novel.

Quick write - max 10 mins - Have you ever done something you knew was against the rules but you felt like it was the right thing to do in that particular situation? (For example, maybe you know that you're not allowed to leave the classroom but you know a friend is really sad and in the washroom or you know you shouldn't speed, but your wife is pregnant and needs to go to the hospital or you know fighting is against the rules but you fight a bully or...or...)
