Holly Bilton from CAREERS: the Next Generation is here to present today.
We are getting close to wrapping up our careers unit. Today we are starting class with a quiz on employment standards...YAY!! Then we are going over occupational health and safety and looking at your rights and responsibilities. We will be looking at the act (http://work.alberta.ca/documents/WHS-PUB_li008.pdf) and at some videos which show risk potential at work and how to be a safer worker. http://work.alberta.ca/occupational-health-safety/bloodylucky.html. If time, you can work on your portfolios for the rest of class.
Today we are going over employment standards. It is important to know your rights and responsibilities in the work place. You will be developing your own quiz on this in pairs today. On this web site are several documents that deal with employability standards. Today you will create the quiz questions at www.socrative.com and then tomorrow you will give the quiz to another group in the class. We may exchange these several times. This information WILL be tested on your unit exam so you need to know it!
Today we are continuing on our portfolio development.
It's portfolio building week!! Today you will get back your edited resumes and cover letters. The corrections should be made and then they can be printed and put into your portfolios. This is the week to get everything put together so please bring in supplies and pictures over the next few days.
Today we are looking at how to get a job and the hidden job market (see slide show on resource page). You will have the rest of the time to work on your portfolio assignment.
Today we are beginning to build our portfolios. You will be given a portfolio and begin to make the title pages for the various sections of the binder. If you haven't completed your resume and cover letter that must be done as well.
Today is our last day working with our Resume and Cover letters. These should be printed and edited and ready to be marked by the end of class today.
We are just now coming to the end of our work on Resumes and will start on our cover letter today. You will choose a job that you are pretending to be applying for and write a cover letter for that job. This will go with your resume and be placed in your portfolio. Your goal is to have a printed resume by the end of today's class and potentially a cover letter.
