We will start class with vocabulary and then our grammar gambit.  Today's gambit is an online comma quiz

We will then continue to work through both our character chart and the rest of Act I.  We will do a quick quiz to check for understanding, finish our character charts for all the characters that have been introduced and do a short practice writing assignment on hysteria (see google classroom)

Today we worked on our vocabulary and then through 5 sentences from student writing.

We then finished our presentations, took out our plays, divided up the roles and began reading the text.  We read from page 3-13 today and then started a character chart in our notes.  We created a table with sections including the character's name, narrator notes and then personal insights.  We only were able to get done Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams today.

Contextual research is due next week so it is imperative that students use the two hours of class time to complete this research.  Whatever is not accomplished today will be homework.

We will continue with our work on commas.  Today you will get to edit a series of sentences in groups and then we'll mark them in class.

We are moving on to contextual research for the play "The Crucible".  This is a fascinating time in history and a fascinating author.  You will find the assignment in your google classroom

Vocabulary continued

Grammar - Commas - We will have a much harder comma challenge today

We will discuss the meaning of the poem "Invictus" and then my ELA 20-1 students will research the poetic devices employed (these can be found at http://www.poetryfoundation.org/learning/glossary-terms?category=techniques-and-figures-of-speech) and write a short critical response linking these devices to the theme of the poem.

My ELA 20-2 will discuss the use of metaphor and create an extended metaphor for a situation (bus ride, basketball game, hockey arena, visit to a bathroom...anything).  They will take the situation and a separate object or situation and draw a comparison.

We will then watch two videos from shawshank

Today, we are writing our reading diagnostic exam.  This may take both periods.  When you are done, we are reading the poem "Invictus".  Your task is to determine the meaning of the poem and the imagery used.
