Today, we are writing our reading diagnostic exam. This may take both periods. When you are done, we are reading the poem "Invictus". Your task is to determine the meaning of the poem and the imagery used.
Vocabulary building to start class - quiz is tomorrow for the first ten words.
Grammar Gambit today is a new set of spelling words. We are going to write our first personal response to text assignment. This is your first marked assignment (though you will have the opportunity to learn and rewrite it). You will have 50 minutes to write in class and then the opportunity to finish it for homework if you need to. We will do some discussion and editing in class tomorrow and then you will submit it for marking. After writing the personal response, we are going to watch an autobiography of Malcolm X and discuss the black civil rights movement in the United States and the role of leaders such as Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. We'll talk about the idea of "arming the spirit" and how it may have related to those enduring the holocaust as well as those enduring the constraints of racial prejudice. We will watch 2 documentaries - One a 10 minute beginning to a PBS video and the other a short 4 minute summary of his life. We will then read the essay "Homemade Education". We will continue to work on our skills with annotation and discuss the type and style of essay it is. You will be asked to compare this essay with "Arming The Spirit" and you will be asked to identify the thesis of the essay. If there is time remaining at the end of class, we will discuss the power of words. We'll start class with vocabulary again today.
Today's grammar gambit is to write six sentences - 2 complete and 2 incomplete and 2 run-on sentences on a google doc. You will then share with another team and fix their sentences. I will come around and determine points. This is a timed event and not completing part of the task will result in fewer points. We will take out your annotations on Faludy's essay "Arming the Spirit". We will discuss what type of essay it is and the effectiveness of the stylistic choices and structure of the essay. If time, we will go over the options for the personal response to text assignment. We will begin class working with our new vocabulary lists on www.bigiqkids.com. Our log in is [email protected] and our password is caroline. Please find your name and begin working through the vocabulary.
Our second day of grammar continues and we will review run on sentences today and have a space race on socrative. We will begin exploring our first text "Arming the Spirit" and discuss what it means to annotate text. You will be given an option today to either work with a paper copy or use annotation software at http://a.nnotate.com/ . Either way it doesn't matter. We will practice this skill today as learning how to do a close reading and analysing text is an essential skill for ELA 20. We will look at personal response to text writing today and do some brainstorming on the topic. Welcome to English 20!!
